Sag Harbor Real Estate Analysis

Sag Harbor

At A Glance Location: A 2.5 square mile harbor town sandwiched between tony East Hampton and Southampton in Suffolk County, New York. Population (2009) 2,440; median age, 46.3 years

Median Household Income: $67,649 Famous Residents: E.L. Doctorow (novelist), Betty Friedan (feminist), Joe Pintauro (playwright), John Steinbeck (Nobel Prize for Literature winner). Brief History In the late 1700s, Sag Harbor was one of the country’s busiest whaling ports, attracting ships from around the world and harboring more vessels than even New York City. The village is mention several times in literature’s most famous whaling book “Moby-Dick.”

The harbor town, named for the “sagabon” vine grown by the local Algonquin Indians, has long been considered a writers’ haven. “The Last of the Mohicans” author James Fenimore Cooper arrived in Sag Harbor in 1818 searching for whales and taking notes that surely informed his many sea-stories. John Steinbeck was living on Sag Harbor’s Bluff Point when he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962. What’s It Like Now Sag Harbor today still looks like a whaling town, but a rich one with narrow streets, a busy wharf, quaint shops and million dollar cottages. Among the Hamptons weekend retreats, the village is considered quieter and brainer than its tony neighbors Southampton and East Hampton.

Residents and weekenders spend their time attending book signings and readings, meandering through the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum, watching fireworks at the Sag Harbor Yacht Club, and watching performances at the Bay Street Theater.
Sag Harbor nightlife includes sipping a blackberry cosmopolitan at the Oasis Waterfront Restaurant & Bar, noshing on grilled pizzettes by the fireplce at the Grappa Wine Bar, or taking in the incredible view of the yacht basin at the Sag Harbor Bar & Grill.
