The hamlet of Montauk, in the township of East Hampton, makes up the easternmost section of Long Island in Suffolk County, N.Y. Nicknamed The Last Resort because of its location on the very end of Long Island, it is bordered by water to the north with Block Island Sound and to the south with the Atlantic Ocean. This area of the Hamptons also includes Sag Harbor, Wainscott, Easthampton, Springs, Amagansett and Napeague.
Celebrated as a beach resort, this little town has a laid-back ambience, which promotes casual attire and a desire for lightweight sweaters during breezy summer nights on the beach where vacationers gather to take in the white sands and intoxicating ocean views. As inviting as the water is for surfers and jet-skiers, the land is equally inviting for bicycling, golfing, horseback riding. More than 5,000 acres of public beaches and parkland suit hikers as well as families with young children. Montauk is a lively, bustling village during the warmer months when luxury hotels and bed and breakfasts are open for reservations but shifts to a quiet town in the cooler seasons. Considered the fishing capital of the world for housing the largest fishing fleet in New York, Montauk primarily sees fishermen during the cooler weather as well as asmattering of off-season enthusiasts and accordingly limited lodging options.
Initially developed during the 1920s as the Miami Beach of the North, artists and celebrities alike continue to leave their mark on Montauk, home to Andy Warhol’s 1970s estate, jazz great Toots Thielemans and singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. The experience here is akin to taking a long, breath of fresh air into a completely relaxed state of being whether spending a day sidewalk strolling amid local shops and corner stores or dining lakeside near the docks of Montauk Harbor.
When commuting, visitors hop on the Long Island Rail Road, which brings passengers to New York’s Penn Station; the Hampton Jitney bus service that runs into Manhattan; or small planes that make their way in and out of Montauk Airport.
